- Pollarding involves the removal of all of the leaf bearing structure of a tree, leaving just a scaffold structure. This will then activate dormant buds which will produce mass shoots and begin to reform a canopy.
- It is important to note that only certain species will tolerate such harsh pruning, and it should initially be carried out on young trees and then incorporated into a cyclic management plan as the regrowth will generally feature weak attachments which could be prone to tearing out if it is not managed correctly.
